DELE goals and chatty fluency pull in different directions — plan for the outcome you actually need.
What exams reward
DELE and GCSE Spanish test reading precision, structured writing, and predictable speaking prompts. Examiners want clear tense control, register awareness (tú vs usted), and task completion — not charming small talk.
What conversation rewards
Real dialogues tolerate false starts, circumlocution ("the thing you use to…"), and imperfect subjunctive gaps if you communicate intent. Fluency is speed plus repair strategies — "¿Cómo se dice…?" is a feature, not failure.
| Goal | Weekly focus |
|---|---|
| DELE B1 in six months | Past paper writing + timed listening |
| Holiday conversation | Role-play ordering, directions, small talk |
| Work with Spanish clients | Industry vocabulary + formal email templates |

Passing B1 does not guarantee banter at a bar — and banter alone will not pass B1.
Splitting your week if you need both
- Three sessions: textbook or exam prep (grammar, reading).
- Two sessions: AI or language-exchange speaking with no notes.
- One session: record yourself against a past paper speaking task.
When to pivot
If your exam date moved, shift ratio toward conversation to stay motivated. If a work relocation accelerated, deprioritise obscure written formats and load professional vocabulary.
